you're watching also how the gop handles immigration. listen to florida senator marco rubio, a possible presidential candidate, who knows in, 2016. listen. >> it's really hard to get people to listen to you on economic growth, on tax rates, on health care if they think you want to deport their grandmother. >> how does, anna, the gop get past this to appeal to latinos who want job growth, who have in many cases conservative social values, who could really be republican in many, many ways. >> i think marco rubio is absolutely right, and i think bobby jindal says it exactly the right way also a few weeks ago. you know, voters want to vote for somebody that likes them. we need to have the right policy, but we also need to have the right tone, the right message and the right messenger. the truth is we didn't have that in this election, but i think there are people like a marco rubio, like a bobby jindal and a jeb bush who do understand, who are going to put effort and the long-term campaign outreach for hispanic voters, and i think the best thing we can do, christine, is solve th

protection. to finish, i'm party to the negotiations with senator rubio in the state capital working on c-e-q-a reform hopefully next year. what you are being asked to do today is a process to hasten the c-e-q-a [speaker not understood] will not be addressed as part of that process. what you're doing is important and it will have meaningful impact. thank you. >> thank you. >>> good afternoon, commissioners. my name is joan wood. i live in north beach. i'm a native san franciscan, third generation, actually. it was interesting that supervisor wiener seemed to be revealing that the main thing that has sent him into this litigation is the north beach library. it really made him crazy because we're still objecting -- we're on appeal now. even the judge that heard our lawsuit stated that the work of the north beach library is violating the city charter, but she still decided against us. it's food for thought. we're appealing and the same judge, she receives all the cases like this. i've noticed. so, we're not too optimistic. the city went ahead and started the work anyway. that's another clue

representative steinberg together with mr. rubio who has already apparently toured the city with spur about the state starting to address changes. and why not just streamline it so we don't have to go back and revise it and adjust it? i think it's all a question of efficiency and who participates in the discussion. from my personal experience sitting here where i sit, i would actually strongly advise that appeals are not filed early on when the first action is taken, but that they are filed when there is as much wrote et disclosure as there is possibly available. i have participated in the project which was heard in front of this commission over a time frame of ten years. that being treasure island. the first e-i-r on that project was probably file number 2004, 2005, only for the project to completely and totally transform itself even in the hearing, in the e-i-r hearing. there were design and major changes pushed through in the last five days. different documents were issued [speaker not understood] including during the hearing. there were substantive changes made. that applies to bayview

democrat, young this man and the senate, 35-years-old, to marco rubio did what lay ahead and done. he did the numbers. in other words, stephen douglas d. term and that there were enough combinations of votes in the senate to pass the different parts of the compromise but not all at once. so the past six separate bills using different combinations. so the lesson is persuasion is necessary and imperative to sway the downfall but if you don't do the numbers coming you won't succeed. these men together cindy obsequy to this gimmick we are speaking with fergus bordewich authors of "america's great debate" stephen a. douglas and the compromise of the union. thank you. >>> i think the writers institute is very important with a culture. we are a culture of words and voices. words are key to our imagination and capacity to envision things. we ourselves are not completely tied to print on the page. but i think that there is no other art form so readily

that are of minority. look at susanna martinez, ted cruz, marco rubio, et cetera, to see where we have leading voices. >> rick: last question, and quickly, optimism for the future of the gop? >> very optimistic. i was with jake and meghan not too long ago at the massachusetts republican convention today where we saw 60 cr's come out before their finals, not 24 days after suffering the defeat here in boston and just to see such positive and positive enthusiasm for the future. these kids are ready to get on their campuses in the spring and start recruiting. >> rick: great to speak with all three of you. hope we can keep the conversation going over the next couple of years. >> thanks for having us. >> arthel: coming up, american students are racking up loans and they're doing it fast, owing nearly $1 trillion and taxpayers may be on the line. could there be a repeat of the subprime mortgage crisis? >> rick: a favor repaid after super storm sandy, a group of new orleans firefighters traveling to new york city will tell you how they plan to help. >> it's a helpless feeling right now. as you can see, you h

, susanna martinez, the first latina governor. marco rubio, ted cruz, michael steele. we also have in louisiana, the governor there, mr. jindal. republicans never get credit. nicky haley, she is a republican female governor and yet you don't see her on the front pages. instead, what you're talking about is this nonstory about whether or not house republicans have women in leadership positions. but you never mention all of the minorities of women who are leading this party forward. at the republican convention, just this last summer, you saw such a diverse roster taking that stage. but what are we talking about today? white males. >> well, that happens to be the topic today. i can't say we never address that. we've talked a lot about nicky haley and others on this program. but we've also talked a lot about abortion in the past and how some controversial comments about it cost a couple republican hopefuls. amy is there room in the party for a pro-choice candidate. and could they actually win? >> indeed, i think there is room for a pro-choice candidate when mayor giuliani, he's pro-ch
